Where does ozone come from?Ozone is formed naturally by the Ultra-Violet Rays of the sun (photochemical reaction) and by lightning (bioelectric reaction).There are basically two methods of producing ozone: ultra-violet; and corona discharge.Most equipment uses the corona discharge method, simulating in essence, lightening. The silent corona discharge method that mimics the action of the lightning is the most usual method of ozone production for a washroom. The corona discharge electrodes are simple and inexpensive to clean or replace and they consume very little electrical energy. The output from the machines can be easily controlled to suit the size of room and the level of odour.
How long does ozone last?
Ozone is extremely unstable and has a short life expectancy. It breaks up into oxygen in less than 20 minutes. It is very susceptible to heat, thus once ozonated water is boiled, ozone turns back into oxygen quickly. Ozone cannot be stored and must be generated on site.
As soon as ozone is formed in the generator and dispersed in a room, it will start to revert back to oxygen. This step occurs by several processes including the following: Oxidation reactions with an organic material such as odours or smoke; reactions with bacteria etc., which again consumes ozone by oxidation reactions. Additionally ozone breaks down thermally. Higher temperatures destroy ozone quicker than lower temperatures. Therefore, ozone while very powerful doesn't last long...just does it's job and disappears.

Several regulatory agencies, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), have stipulated that the safe allowable level of residual is 0.1 ppm (parts per million). Note that this permissible level is for continuous exposure throughout an entire 8 hour day. The temporary affects of such a low exposure would range from headaches, to sore throats, irritation in the eyes, and nose. No long term effects have ever been documented from ozone exposure.
